Yoga and Weight Loss

Can Yoga help you lose weight?

Most people know that practicing Yoga can be relaxing and wonderful for stress management. If you’ve attended a Yoga class, hopefully you’ve been led through a guided relaxation at the end of your class called Savasana which, after practicing the postures, will leave you feeling rested and relaxed. But Yoga is not just about relaxation and Savasana. That’s just the icing on the cake.

In the beginning classes, we introduce the postures but after a few weeks of regular practice you can’t help but see changes in yourself. One of the most noticeable differences will be in the way you look and feel physically. If you’re sticking with the program, Yoga is all you really need for your fitness regime. It will bend, stretch and strengthen you like nothing else. It will make you feel taller. You’ll move every muscle and tone every area of your body. Yoga lengthens and strengthens at the same time creating a long and lean physique.

With a regular practice of Yoga, many health concerns such as arthritis, headaches, stress management and digestion problems can improve. Yoga helps the body’s organs work more efficiently. Imagine all the tension and tightness in your shoulders releasing. Imagine yourself full of life, happiness and peace. This is Yoga.

But how does this 5,000 year old science help you lose weight? Yoga helps you to live in the moment. Regular practice provides a sense of calmness and improves your relationship with others. It helps you to have a positive outlook on life because you are at peace. When the body, mind and spirit are in harmony, there is no need for overeating. Food becomes fuel and the fresher it is the better. You eat slower and more mindfully. Yoga will make your body feel alive and put you in touch with your true self. So, yes, Yoga can help you lose weight if that is your goal. Even if you don’t give it a thought but allow Yoga to be a part of your life, you will realize benefits you never thought possible – including helping with weight management. Yoga will help you to be your absolute best. The beauty of Yoga is that you start where you are and go from there.

Of course it doesn’t hurt to remember the words of Miss Piggy: “Never eat more than you can lift.”
